Starting-up a new business has a lot to it; it’s an overwhelming but fun and vastly rewarding process! I tried to keep things simple and when it came time to build the service list - I was in no mood to get creative or extensive or confuse people with lots of words and options - I’ll admit, I stumbled into some equality by accident.
Gender divided service lists are the standard in aesthetics and I sat there asking myself why have 2 prices for literally the same exact body parts? It’s skin & hair, let's make a full leg a full leg, an arm an arm, brows brows, and call it a day! Because we all know people come in ALL sizes and hair types and we aestheticians know that a "men's brow" can be just as extensive either in regards to shaping or simply taming. There is no standard to uphold here and never should have been. So there I went on my merry way: one service list and one price point for all! Yay!!!
Then came time to tackle learning all the signs I needed to post and I came across this one in all caps required in the lobby:
“CALIFORNIA LAW PROHIBITS ANY BUSINESS ESTABLISHMENT FROM DISCRIMINATING, WITH RESPECT TO THE PRICE CHARGED FOR SERVICES OF SIMILAR OR LIKE KIND AGAINST A PERSON BECAUSE OF THE PERSON’S GENDER. A COMPLETE PRICE LIST IS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.”
There we have it folks. I must hand it to California for being on top of it with this one. We must treat people as humans rather than continuously trying to segregate them in every way. I think then our true individualities will have more room to shine!
Now, I'll address what I've already received heat about.... a brazilian wax is currently only available for female external genitalia, aka no manzilians. While I don’t treat people as different because of their equipment, I do see the equipment as different when compared to one another in regards to a service. A penis is not a vagina, but it can become one if it wants! My choice to not perform brazilians on male external genitalia is my personal decision and is not meant to discriminate or judge. It is meant to protect myself; my health and safety as an individual come first and both have been jeopardized in the past. I would love to make exceptions for people, but at this time that is not an option. Fingers crossed for the future though! Thank you for understanding.
